On the Executive Order Rolling Back Police Accountability Reforms

Today, Donald Trump issued Executive Order 14182 rolling back police accountability nationwide.

This order demands expanded military equipment and personnel while creating new legal protections that would shield officers from legitimate lawsuits. It dismantles oversight systems established after George Floyd's murder, deploys Homeland Security task forces into cities to treat local crime as national security threats, and penalizes city officials who legally implement police reforms.

Minneapolis needs genuine public safety reform - we're failing to ensure all residents feel safe. Our federal consent decree exists because we failed to protect everyone's rights. We cannot improve by returning to tactics that divide communities and ignore real needs.

True public safety requires transparency, accountability, and systems grounded in civil rights and human dignity. We need better police training focused on de-escalation, mental health response, and community trust.

As both a former Minneapolis attorney and candidate for Mayor, I will use the law to advance our city and protect everyone's rights against these legal attacks.
